The 7 Ways Blogging Influenced My Reading Habits

Good evening, you guys! Or morning? When are you reading this post? As I am writing this it’s almost midnight (living that night owl life) and I kept going back and forth between Netflix and writing a new blog post so I decided I would do both! Because (something else you should know about me is):

im really bad at making decisions 1.gif

Anyways, let’s get back on topic, shall we? I feel like I’ve already rambled too much and instead, I should have gotten to the point already (I ramble as I talk about my tendency to ramble… wow). Concentrate, damn it.

Do you guys ever think back to your reading habits before you decided to start your blog? I’m certain we all loved to read long before we got into blogging (why else would we want to share our love with everyone else via a blog, right?) but I always wondered how our reading would change because of it – which is exactly what I’m going to be talking about today!

The Number Of Books I Read

Something I always notice when I look at my Goodreads is the fact that I have read so many books already this year. In fact, this year has been my biggest reading year since I created my Goodreads account. But I can’t say if it’s all down to me having this blog or if it’s also because I am home at the moment and therefore have all the time in the world to read as many (or little) books as I would like. It might be a combination of both because I’m pretty sure I’ve had really great reading years while I was in school before too!

me trying to read multiple books at once

The Time I Invest Into Reading

We’ve discussed previously that I am a mood reader which also shows in the amount of time I end up spending reading books because it varies so much. Some months, I will read book after book and I can’t seem to be able to stop while other months I will barely read anything. This is hands down something that has always been true for me. I’ve always been someone to read the night away whenever I would get into a book. I’ve always been someone who can go months without picking up a book and then read a lot of books the next month.

The Books I Read

This is definitely something that has been affected by me having this blog and reading you guys’ blogs! I mean, I have been watching BookTube for years now and I do follow a bunch of bookstagram accounts (because who doesn’t want all those pretty pictures on their timeline???) but I think actually interacting with other readers instead of being a passive member of the community has introduced me to some really fun books already!

you guys are amazing and i love you

The Way I Approach Reading Slumps

Nobody actually likes falling into a reading slump, right? But I almost feel like it’s been worse since I started blogging because (especially in the very beginning) I feel like I should have new books to talk to you guys about and if I’m not reading new books there isn’t anything to talk about. Which is sad, really. But I’ve also slowly made myself realize that it’s no good for anyone involved if I read because I think I have to. I will end up enjoying the book a lot less and that’s no fun!

The Amount Of Series I Read

Prior to starting this blog, I was only reading a handful of ongoing books (and I loved it, don’t get me wrong!) but ever since I started on here and found so many great new books, my ongoing series have kind of exploded? Which makes keeping up with them all a bit difficult at times and you have to prioritize (which is horrible, okay? I am currently holding off on getting Tower Of Dawn because I have other books I want to/need to read first) which isn’t always so easy – especially if you’re me.

this is really tough

The Rate At Which My TBR Grows

Honestly, my TBR has always been pretty big (at one point, I would always add entire series to it – which was stupid) but it has also been growing much quicker since I started blogging because I am so much more aware of which new releases are headed our way and of course I need to read them all. Like in Pokemon. Gotta catch ’em all and stuff.

The Language I Read In

I don’t know how many of you guys are aware of this, but English isn’t actually my first language. German is. And I’ve been reading books in just English for a couple of years now because I would hear about these new releases from American BookTubers and wanted to be able to read them as soon as possible too. But ever since I started this blog and discovered German websites that allow you to read books early, I’ve been trying to get back into reading in German again. Which isn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I surround myself with the English language so much that it’s sometimes more difficult to read in my native tongue – which is just ridiculous to me.

i cant read a thing

Have you guys noticed any changes in your reading habits ever since you started your blog? Do you find yourself reading more books? Does your TBR grow at a really quick pace?

If your habits have changed, how do you feel about it? Is there anything you’re really thankful for that blogging has brought you? Something you wish you could change? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

    1. Isn’t it funny how we sometimes forget what we were doing before we took up a new hobby? I used to wonder what I was doing with all my time before I started watching a bunch of different tv-shows a couple of years ago and now I spend most of my time either reading or blogging!

    1. It honestly is! My TBR used to be somewhat manageable too, but especially with August and September releases, it kind of exploded. And October is a big release month too.

  1. Interesting discussion! I definitely read more since I started blogging, and my TBR has EXPLODED. I can’t be mad, though, I discovered so many amazing books thanks to recommendations, I love it so, so much. ❤ Also, I can relate so, very much to reading in your own language. I read everything in English and…I wonder if I'll ever be able to read a book in French again, this makes me feel a bit awkward about my own language now hahaha. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this weird struggle!

    1. I would never be able to be mad either about the size of my TBR because I’ve found so many great books too!

Being bilingual is both a blessing and a curse! Anytime I try to explain something I saw on the internet to my siblings I often struggle to find the right German word which can get quite frustrating but I wouldn’t change it for a thing in the end! Imagine missing out on the awesomeness that is the international book community!

      1. SAME HEREE, the same thing happens to me ALL the time 😂 Most of the time, I just give up trying to find the right word. Sometimes I think I don’t know how to express myself right in my own language 😂 😂

  2. I feel like I read way less than I used to when it comes to blogging! 😂 Blogging takes up a lot of my typical reading time (and I feel like I’m more into watching TV and movies this year). And I feel like I read more newer releases than backlist releases which is both good and bad, I guess? I really wish I read more backlist books, but it’s hard to keep up when there’s new releases ALL THE TIME!

    1. I often find myself going back and forth as watching more TV or reading more books go! This month I watched the first seasons of both Daredevil and Jessica Jones which took up quite a bit of my reading time and I’m about to get into Luke Cage too! So who knows if I’ll get any real reading done this month.

I’m definitely the same too! I think the only backlist books I’ve read so far were re-reads which don’t really count, do they? But how can you NOT read all the new releases when they are so shiny and new??? We just simply can’t resist!

      1. NO WAY! Those were the shows I was watching! 😂 I watched Jessica Jones and Luke Cage just so I could watch The Defenders (all three were amazing), and I still want MORE MARVEL! I think I should finish off Daredevil season 2 because I still haven’t finished it yet oops. I’m so excited for The Punisher. 😍

        1. I was going to go straight into Daredevil season 2, but my friend told me to watch the other shows first too and I’m really glad that I did because I really enjoyed Jessica Jones and just the first episode of Luke Cage was so awesome already! It’s SO much darker and grittier – I love it!

Also, is there a thing such as enough Marvel??? I might need to rewatch my Captain America DVDs soon because I miss Steve Rogers! And I still haven’t seen Spider-Man which is quite embarrassing…

          1. Yes, I love how dark they are! The Jessica Jones series sold me on her; I think she’s now in my Top 5 fave superheroes! I can’t wait for season 2 for both series, since it’s supposed to come out next year!

You should! I think I’ve watched Winter Solider three times now? XD I just love Chris Evans/Captain America too much! Haha, my best friend irl was so shocked I hadn’t seen it and made me go the movies with her just to watch it! It was so good, though, so I hope you get to see it soon!

          2. They weren’t showing Spider-Man at the cinema closest to me and I didn’t want to drive into the other city because the thought of driving around there terrifies me. xD But once the DVD is released, I’ll definitely watch it!

  3. Such a great discussion because I RELATE so much to it! (Well not the reading German part but I am learning Korean and IT. IS. HARD.) I read totally different now… I was always the rebel reading indie books and while I haven’t STOPPED I do read a lot more hyped books and soon to be released books! Also I’m always trying to squeeze a book into my month, lol. When before it was a lovely easygoing hobby! ❤

    1. Thank you, Dani! I’m so happy you can relate to this post! I should probably try and squeeze a book into this book but I’ve been so distracted by the awesomeness that is Netflix’ Marvel shows at the moment! I can’t seem to get myself to read a book…

  4. I’ve actually been reading less series since I started blogging, or at least I’ve been only starting series that are new releases. Funny how blogging can effect the way you read

      1. YES! I’ve never been great with finishing series but then blogging came along and so did all of these new releases – and my favorite genre is fantasy so those are almost always series

  5. This is a great discussion topic! The number of books I read since I started blogging has increased exponentially. Interacting with other bloggers has definitely given me some great recommendations, too. But unlike you, I find that I read less series now than before blogging! I think because so many new releases that get a lot of attention in this community are standalones.

    1. Thank you, I’m happy to hear you liked it Madalyn!

Oh yeah, we’ve definitely been getting some really amazing standalones which helps with my TBR overall because I won’t be adding a bunch of books to it if I like the first book in a new series.

  6. great post! i really enjoyed this topic! 🙂
my reading habits definitely changed. most of all, my tbr is growing soooo fast. it’s ridiculous! 😀
but i totally agree on the number of books i read. it’s not since my blog, because that one is pretty new to me, but all in all the book community. i have read so many books this year, which is crazy too me, because the sum of this is basically what i’ve read before in my life all together before joining goodreads. craaazy!
as for the language. i do not touch german books at all anymore. i find it very difficult to read a german book these days, that’s why i stay away from them. totally creepy i know, since it’s my language, but no, i do not enjoy german books and i hate translations. that started with movies and tv shows and at some point it came to books and i am so happy about that 🙂

    1. Thank you Alex! I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed this post! 😀

I’ve always been a pretty big reader – especially as a teenager. I would visit my local library SO often the women working there still recognize me even though I haven’t stopped by in YEARS.

Oh yeah, I started with watching my shows in English too mainly because they didn’t have the translation airing here yet and I am impatient AF! But that was the best thing to happen to me because it really helped me improve my English on so many levels!

Translations also suck in general! Often so many jokes get lost because they don’t work in German anymore.

      1. yes, i also started watching shows and movies in english because i wanted to improve my english but since then (and it’s been many many years) i just can’t watch german movies anymore. it’s so bad. so many things and emotions get lost, it’s crazy!

  7. I have also been reading a lot more this year! I didn’t start blogging until half way through the year, but I’m already at 100! ((Although for similar reasons, it could be because I have a little more unstructured time.))

I also have tried to make more conscious decisions to read more diverse female authors. (Although, I still read a lot of what is on my TBR pile which has also grown sky high lately.)

I bought Tower of Dawn but I’m likewise putting off starting it. Partially because I get sucked into Sarah J. Maas’ work and will become a zombie and I have grading to do, but partially because I have som many library books to finish first!

    1. That is a lot of reading already done, congrats! I hope you enjoyed most of them!

That should 100% be something that I put on my goals list for next year, because I don’t feel like I read too many diverse authors in general – even though I have a good few on my general author TBR list!

Yeah, I’m currently trying to decide if I should buy Wonder Woman or Tower Of Dawn first because while I want them both, I need to watch my book buying a little bit the next few months. But I turn into a zombie with Sarah’s books too! There’ll be nothing I’ll want to read or do until I have finished the book!
