11 Reasons Why I Love Audiobooks // Basically, I Am Trying To Convince You To Give Them A Chance!

Earlier this year, I finally decided I would give audiobooks a try. Everyone was always talking about how great they are to get more reading done and how much they love them – so I obviously needed to know what that was all about. But to be honest with you guys, it did take me a little bit to actually fall in love with them. Once I did? I fell hard. I love audiobooks and do quite a lot of my reading that way, actually!

So, I figured for today I would talk about all of the reasons why I love audiobooks so much and hopefully, I can convince you guys to at least give them a try too! I mean, your first audiobook is free with audible so you’ve got nothing to lose!

I Can Read While Doing Something Else

This is probably one of my favorite things about having audiobooks ready for me to listen to (or listen to again) because I can listen to them while I am doing something else. A load of dishes is waiting? Great! I’ll just put on my audiobook and listen to it while doing them. Want to read more but you should also take a shower? Turn on that audiobook and hop in there! Really, it’s perfect for multitasking!

They Are A Fantastic Tool To Fall Asleep With

Usually, I don’t just fall asleep on my own. Most of the time I’ll either watch YouTube or Netflix to try and fall asleep. Which doesn’t always happen so sometimes I’ll just turn everything off and choose an audiobook I’ve finished already to help myself fall asleep. This way, I don’t miss out on any of the stories because I already know them and I have something to fall asleep to.

And if I decide I want to continue a book I am currently reading that’s new to me, I’ll just set a timer. Though most of the time I’ll still go back to the chapter I started with and listen to it again in the morning. But I don’t mind.

You Don’t Have To Actually Do The Reading

I’m sure we’ve all been in a situation where we really wanted to read a book but we also didn’t want to actually do the reading. I know I’ve found myself in that position quite a few times! That’s when audiobooks come in! You’ve got someone else doing the reading for you! How awesome is that?

But, as a sidenote: this sometimes comes with a problem of itself because you might not like the narrator which could influence how you feel about the book in general. That’s why I never get a book if I don’t like the narrator. Even if I really wanted to get it.

You Aren’t Carrying Around Heavy Books

As of right now, I have a total of 20 audiobooks on my phone and six of them are unread. If I were to try and carry around those six books with me just in case I wanted to read them at any moment, I would probably seriously damage my back. Instead, all I have to carry with me is my phone and a pair of headphones which doesn’t weigh much at all. And I can just pick up any of those 20 audiobooks at any given point in time. It’s fantastic, really!

You Get To Mix Up The Ways You Consume A Book

I think pretty much every bookworm loves the smell of books and the feeling of physically holding them. I sure do! But I also think it’s important to mix up the ways we consume our books. Be it physical, ebooks or audiobooks. They are all fantastic ways to read a book and might even help you read more – it definitely helps me!

You Safe A Good Deal Of Money

Physical copies of books can be really, really expensive. Especially newly released hardcovers! And we don’t all have the money to spend on a ton of books each month. I’ve found that I save quite a good deal of money with audiobooks! I currently have a subscription that is 5€ per month. I don’t think I could get a new release that cheap anywhere.

If You Don’t Like It – You Can Just Return It!

Sometimes, even though you’ve given the audiobook a listen and liked the narrator and the synopsis of the book, you end up not liking the audiobook and that’s no problem at all! You can just return it and you get to choose a different one instead. Which is fantastic, really! I do take advantage of this from time to time when I realize that I am not enjoying the audiobook as much as I had hoped.

It’s A Fantastic Way Of Tuning Out The World Around You While Being Out And About

Whenever I’m out and about and I don’t want to be bothered by anyone or anything, I love to just put on an audiobook and listen to it. You get to dive into an entirely different world while also getting some fresh air! Or ignoring others.

It’s A Great Companion For When You Have To Do Boring Adult Chores

See, as an adult who lives on her own I have to do stuff like grocery shopping, running errands, etc and honestly, those are such boring chores. Even grocery shopping has become boring since I moved out. I used to love it! But! With an audiobook in my ear, even the most boring of adult chores can be fun! Even making dinner! Or doing the dishes. Or doing laundry! You should try it!

You Can Read A Book In A Moving Vehicle Without Suffering From Motion Sickness

There used to be a time when I was perfectly capable of reading while in a car (not while driving, obviously!) but these days? That’s just not going to happen. Weirdly enough though, I can read my study notes while on the bus?! But not a book. Because why would I be able to do something that is actually fun right??? Anyways, audiobooks are the perfect solution for when you want to read but can’t read a physical book!

We recently visited family who live about 5 hours from us and on the way home, my audiobook is what helped me both fall asleep and also pass time actively listening to it! It was awesome.

You Can Speed Up The Time At Which The Narrator Speaks

Honestly, this took me way too long to figure out. I hate it when people do anything slowly (especially walking. oh. my. god!!!) and when I listened to my first audiobook I would get annoyed at how slowly the narrator was talking. But once I figured out that I could speed it up? Dude. That was almost life changing!

Nowaways, I usually listen at a speed of at least 1.80x the normal and it’s just about perfect. Sometimes I can go even faster because the narrator is that slow! And all of a sudden that 18-hour long audiobook isn’t quite as long and daunting anymore (I tell myself as I stare at my audiobook of Strange The Dreamer…)!

  1. Completely agree! I ran a 5k listening to an audiobook and it was amazing; I nearly forgot I was running. The first ones I listened to were the 39 Clues and since then I’ve started listening when I do chores and the like. They can really make things more fun!

    1. Ohh I actually like the idea of listening to an audiobook while running… Usually it doesnt work for me to multitask because I pay more attention to what’s in front of me and the narration becomes just background noise. But running doesn’t require me to be so focused, so I think it could work 😀 yep yep, thanks for bringing it up 😉

  3. I wish I could get into audiobooks, but I just don’t have the attention span for it 😅 I could be doing anything (reading, watching or listening to something) and my brain just decides to switch off so audiobooks aren’t really the best thing for me. But I can see why other people love them!

  4. I use them from time to time for short stories or short novels/non-fiction. Otherwise, my attention goes elsewhere. I cannot do anything else while listening or I’m not paying attention to what’s narrated.

  5. I agree 100% with everything you said! I listen to audio books when working out and doing chores. I also like to listen when I am knitting 🙂 I am a Young Adult Lit lover for life so I recommend the Sisterhood of the Traveling pants series. Easy to listen to and your soul will be so refreshed. Not a YA Lit, I also recommend Amy Schumer’s “The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo.” She is raw, hilarious, and she reads her own book! So good!
