2017: A Year Of 8 Bookish Firsts

If you guys are looking at the title of this post and thinking to yourself ‘Has Swetlana lost the plot??? It’s not even the end of 2017 yet and she’s already doing this post!’ – don’t you worry! I haven’t lost it – yet. But I was kind of at a loss for ideas for today’s post and this was sitting in my drafts, so I figured I’d post it today!

Started A Blog To Talk About My Love For Books

Let’s start this list off with the very first bookish thing I did for the first time this year which is creating this little blog here to talk about my love for books! This has past year has been such a great experience reading wise and I’ve read so many great books (more on that in a different post at the actual end of this year) and met so many awesome people! I also think that actually starting this blog heavily influenced all of the following firsts because I probably wouldn’t have tried some of them if it wasn’t for the blogging community!

Read A Book Via Audiobook

You guys might be shocked to hear that I had never tried an audiobook until early this year but it’s true. I never really felt the need to try it before but then I figured that the 30 minute walks to my parents’ place would be so much more fun if I could do something other than listening to music which is where audiobooks came in. And while it took me a little while to actually fall in love with them I am now so in love with them and would do all my reading this way if I could and if you need some convincing as to why audiobooks are great, just follow this link!

Read A Graphic Novel

If you saw my October wrap up you might have seen that I read Wires And Nerve that month and it was actually my first graphic novel ever! I feel like so many book lovers will at least give graphic novels a try but I had never been interested in them, to be honest, but since my first one was a continuation of a series I already loved I knew I had to read it! And now I’m super excited for the sequel Wires And Nerve: Gone Rogue! I can’t wait to see how that storyline wraps up!

Read A Middle-Grade Novel

For some reason, I always thought I was too old to actually enjoy middle-grade novels so I never gave them a try. I have to say though, at least in the case of Furthermore, I was completely wrong! I had such a fantastic time reading the book which made me even more excited for the sequel which releases in under two weeks! And I might even try more middle-grade novels in the future because of my positive experience with this one!

Participated In A Readathon

During the summer, I joined the booktubeathon which marked the first time I had ever done a readathon even though I had seen others do them from time to time. I just never knew if it was something I would want to do because there’s TBRs involved and we all know how I feel about those (if not, check out this post). But! Then a couple of months later I joined readbyzoe’s 24-hour readathon and I had a fantastic time doing it and I actually read so much? I even ended up taking that entire weekend to read as much as I could and ended up with a total of 4 books!

Read My First Poetry Collection

If there is one thing I always, always hated in school it was reading poetry. I hated that my teachers made me interpret all these poems because I always felt like I was doing it wrong and that I never picked up on the things I was supposed to pick up on. So it probably doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone that I never read poems outside of school because of it. But then a few months ago, I decided to give Milk And Honey a try because so many people talk highly of it. And you guys. It was fantastic. I cried. I cried reading poetry. I connected to poems like I never could in school.

Read More Than 50 Books

This is probably my biggest achievement this year and something I never thought would happen. I read a total of 50 books as of October 31st. Fifty books in ten months. I had set my original goal for this year at 20 books and constantly found myself updating it because I reached the newly set number so quickly. But I stopped updating at 50. I’m still going to read as many books as I can (I feel like after the super freaking awesome reading month I had in October I want to read all the books all at once!) and see where my total is going to be by the end of 2017. Do you think I can hit 60? Or maybe even 70? 2017 has already been my best reading year since I joined Goodreads! I think the most I had read so far was 33 books!

Got Accepted For My First ARC

If it hadn’t been for the fact that I started this book blog, I definitely would’ve never requested ARCs but I am honestly so, so glad that this blog allowed me to request ARCs because I’ve read some seriously amazing books thanks to it this year and discovered authors that I hadn’t read before! Honestly, if it wasn’t for ARCs I probably wouldn’t have picked up Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda or The Conqueror’s Saga which would have been so sad because they are so dear to my heart now!

lets chat 1

How about you guys? Have you experienced any bookish firsts this year? I feel like quite a few of you guys also started your blogs around the same time as myself so we have at least that one in common! I can’t wait to read about what other firsts you’ve had this year!

Also, do you guys have any particular posts you would like to see me do for the end of 2017? Other than favorite books, which I’ve already been working on! Please let me know in the comments below!

  1. We share so many of the same bookish firsts this year! Such as graphic novels, ARCs, and participate in a readathon. I didn’t know you started your blog this year! Reading your blog, I’d have guessed you’ve been doing it longer, you’re such a natural!

    1. Thank you, Marie! I’m happy to hear you enjoyed it! I would’ve definitely preferred doing it much later in the year but I was so stuck for any ideas and this post was sitting there already!

I’ve been feeling the same recently too and I am loving it so much! I’m almost at a point where I put down one book and pick up the next right after – which is something I’ve never done before!

    1. Oh yeah, I should’ve probably put Harry Potter on my list too but since I didn’t really enjoy it I didn’t even think of it when writing that post!

Fantasy is SO awesome! I feel like I read mainly fantasy books and then sometimes I’ll dive into something else. This summer I read so much contemporary and it was AWESOME.

To many more firsts next year!

  4. Wow… this is so similar to my firsts too… Starting my blog, accepting ARCs, listening to an audiobook, my highest number of books read in a single year…. This has been so wonderful….!!!

  5. I don’t think I’ve had any bookish first this year because I’ve kind of done the same as I’ve done other years, but I have found a lot of great new-to-me blogs to follow. I’ve been almost following the same blogs for over three years so it’s kind of a big deal to me 🙂

  6. Omg Swetlana literally all of these things were bookish firsts for me too this year! Except that I haven’t read a Middle Grade novel I think???? I can’t remember XD Starting my blog and getting accepted for my first ARC were definitely the most memorable things that happened but I also really liked discovering audiobooks and poetry collections! ❤
