Blogmas Day 5: Top 5 New-To-You Authors

Evening you guys and welcome to Blogmas Day 5! Today we’re going to talk about all those authors that we read for the first time this year and whose writing we just absolutely fell in love with! So far, we’ve just been sharing our love for books but I think it’s important to shout out the authors behind said books too! So, here goes!

Let’s start this list off with an author that I didn’t see making it onto it when I read their book back in February: Becky Albertalli! As you might remember, I read The Upside Of Unrequited earlier this year and while I liked it, I didn’t love it. And just from that experience, I was sure I wouldn’t pick up another Albertalli. But then came that one fateful night this past July when I decided to give the audiobook for Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda a chance and basically fell in love with the writing, characters and story. All within a couple of hours. I was sold. And still, am sold on any and all future books Becky is going to release in the future. I am here for it.

Oh, look! Another contemporary author on my list of new-to-me authors for this year! I pretty much read Sandhya Menon’s When Dimple Met Rishi right after finishing Simon VS and I loved it almost as much! It was a lighthearted and quick read and I really liked Menon’s writing style in it! You know, sometimes all you want is a fluffy and easy read that you can dive into for a couple of hours and forget everything around you. That’s pretty much what she did with her book!

I’m sure this doesn’t come as a surprise to you guys if you read my previous post about favorite sequels/finales but yes, Victoria Schwab has made it onto my list all thanks to her Shades Of Magic trilogy! I was honestly about a hundred pages into the first book when I ordered the second and preordered the third. I don’t usually do this. Usually, I finish a book and then I order the next one if I really liked it, but for me to jump ahead like that? Yeah, that’s definitely a sign of how much I loved her writing! I still have one unread Schwab book on my shelves that I’ll hopefully get to soon so I know if my love for writing continues in her Young Adult novels too – but I’m hopeful.

This author might come as a surprise to you if you read my review for Laini Taylor’s Strange The Dreamer as I ended up not enjoying quite as much as I hoped I would. But we’ll talk a bit more about that in my next blogmas post. But even though I didn’t like Strange as much as I had hoped considering all of the hype it had gotten, I still very much enjoyed Laini’s writing style! Honestly, she has such a way with words??? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if there was a way to steal someone’s writing ability, Laini would be on my list. Hands down! I do hope that the second book in the Strange duology is going to speak to me more and that I’ll fall in love with this series as much as everyone else!

I’ve talked about The Conqueror’s Saga catching me by surprise with how much I loved it and that’s all down to Kiersten’s writing in those books. I was unable to stop reading most of the time and just needed to know what was going to happen next. At this point, I just feel like I’m repeating myself over and over again and you guys are probably reading this last point like ‘Really??? How often can you say the exact same thing???’ but I mean, it’s true? All these writers are fantastic in their own ways and I want to shout from the rooftops how much I love what they do? But apparently, I don’t have enough words to do it properly. So yeah, just know that I really, really loved Kiersten White’s writing and want I want all of you to please go out and buy her books. It’s well worth it!

  1. Great post, you are so on a roll with these Blogmas posts, I love it 🙂 I didn’t read The Upside just yet, but I can’t wait to read it at some point, it sounds so good and I LOVED Simon so, so much. I haven’t read anything by Laini Taylor, but Daughter of Smoke and Bone is waiting for me on my e-reader, I’m eager to discover her writing style, I keep on hearing it is so, so beautiful 🙂

    1. I do try to keep on top of these posts! Today was the first time I got into a bit of a time crunch because I forgot to write the post yesterday. xD

I really hope you end up enjoying Upside! I have a feeling you might though because it was quite beloved! I actually have Daughter Of Smoke And Bone as an audiobook waiting for me, but I just haven’t felt the pull towards it just yet? I keep choosing something else over it…

  2. Becky Albertalli would definitely be on my list as well! I read both of her books in the past couple months, and loved both of them! Also probably Marie Lu… I just read Legend a couple months ago, and it was SO good!

  3. Ooh, I was hesitant about And I Darken at first, but now that I’ve heard more about it, I really want to read it! So I’m glad that was the case for you too, and you ended up loving the book. And YESSS Victoria Schwab!! I read her books this year due to all the hype in the blogging world, and I can state with no hesitance that I. AM. A. FAN. ❤

    Great post!!

    1. Hahaha, that’s pretty much why I read my first Schwab book too! I kept hearing so many people talk about it because the final book was about to be released and I HAD to know what the hype was all about!

I really hope you enjoy And I Darken! The first book may be a lot of set up, but it’s SO worth it for the next book!

Also, I absolutely love your new profile pic!!!

  4. I fell in love with Kiersten White back when she’d only published Paranormalcy and was still updating her blog regularly. She has such an amazing voice and I LOVED her blog. Then I decided to read the Paranormalcy series and loved her writing again. I’m so glad And I Darken got so popular because she is *amazing* even if most people who like And I Darken don’t seem to like her other books? 😛 I’d still recommend the Paranormalcy trilogy – it’s faeries and mermaids and pink tasers… and the voice is wonderful.

  5. Many of the authors on your list are new to me too! Like Sandhya Menon and Kiersten White. I loved both of their books a lot, and I can’t wait to read more. With Kiersten White, however, I think I will read everything she publishes in the future and not her previous works because I’ve heard they’re not as great as The Conqueror’s saga.

I’m on Blogmas Day 11, and I wrote a post about books I SHOULD have read in 2017 but still haven’t. It’s amazing how many of the titles there made no sense because I was so excited about them, but it also inspired me to read even more and get to them soon. Re-reading their synopsis sparked my interest once more!

  6. I read When Dimple Met Rishi as well and it was such a perfect summer romance 😍
Some authors I discovered were Jen Wilde (I adored Queens of Geek), Roshani Chokshi (The Star-Touched Queen had such beautiful writing), Brent Weeks (The Black Prism is a huge adult fantasy tome, but I really loved it) and Alexandra Bracken (Passenger completely surprised me) 🙂

  7. I absolutely love Becky Albertalli! She’s one of my favorites. Nothing will beat Simon for me but I hope her newest release will be just as good! I’ve also read Laini Taylor and I liked Strange the Dreamer but it was slow in the beginning. But her writing is absolutely beautiful! I also love Victoria Schwab but I only read This Savage Song! I really want to read A Darker Shade of Magic eventually because her writing is just so beautiful! I have When Dimple Met Rishi and And I Darken on my shelf so I can’t wait to get into both of these books! Great post!
