Bullet Journaling 101: Intro And Materials

Evening you guys and welcome to a new little series that I want to start on the blog: Bullet Journaling 101!

I’m sure a lot of people have set themselves resolutions for the new year and maybe some of you guys want to be more organized this year which is exactly where the bullet journal comes in! And the best part? You can customize it to your liking – from start to finish.

It’s no secret that I am not the most organized person but I like to try and I’ve experienced that the bullet journal is the best way for me to do that.

And if you’re reading this and screaming at me because you haven’t heard of the term bullet journal yet and don’t know what it is, let me explain!

The bullet journal is at the very base a notebook of your choice that you use to organize your life in bullet points. You can put everything from your appointments, your to-do lists, list of your favorites books/movies/shows to notes into a single notebook. And I know, this sounds like it might not be the most organized way of doing things – but don’t worry! There is a system in place that helps you set everything up and keep things organized, just check the official bullet journal website for all the details (or wait for my upcoming posts, where I will be talking all about it)!

And the best part about a bullet journal? You can start it whenever you want! Also, you can use whatever notebook you have on hand (probably right this second, that you keep telling yourself you’ll use for something). Another tip I want to give you: don’t go looking for bullet journal videos on YouTube right away. It can be pretty overwhelming and make you think that you need all the supplies. Which, honestly? You don’t. All you really need is a notebook and a pen.ย

You might think you need these materials.

When I first got into bullet journaling, I wanted to have all the supplies that I kept seeing everyone on YouTube use – especially the Leuchtturm 1917 notebooks that seemed to be a staple item but I also didn’t want to spend around 15โ‚ฌ (that’s the price on Amazon right now) on a notebook if I wasn’t sure how long I would be using it for or if I would use it at all after a few short weeks.

Luckily, I found a black notebook at a drugstore for just 5โ‚ฌ (I think), so I went for it! And as a student who was trying her best to be organized, I already had a couple of PaperMate InkJoy pens and a 12 pack of Staedtler pens in various colors so I used those too, plus black and blue pens by the BIC brand. And I think this is an important thing to keep in mind if you want to get started: use what you already have.

Pens, pencils, highlighters, rulers, erasers and sharpeners are probably all things you already have on hand – so make use of them. Try them out and try the bullet journal system before you decide to invest in nicer items. I know it’s really tempting to go out there and buy everything you see all over Instagram or YouTube, but you don’t strictly need them. Save your wallet/bank account the trouble! ๐Ÿ˜‰

So, to recap and to make sure you guys are all ready to join in and create a bullet journal with me over the next couple of days and weeks, all I need you guys to prepare is a notebook and a pen of your choice. That’s it. We’ll go from there and set everything up together!

What you actually need.

And if you’re asking yourself ‘How are reading and bullet journals related?!?!’ – oh, just you wait! I already use a couple of different spreads (we’ll get to what that means if you haven’t heard the term before) in my own journal to keep track of my reading and will share them with you guys too! So no need to worry that I am changing my content up too much – we’re still going to be talking about books and reading, we’ll just add something else to the mix!

lets chat 1

Now, are any of you guys already into bullet journaling? Or is it something you haven’t looked into before? Was getting organized one of your resolutions for 2018? If so, are you going to join me in creating this bullet journal to keep track of (at least) your reading life? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. This was an interesting post, thank you! I just started bullet journaling in October but am still changing and adapting every month as I find what works and doesn’t work for me. I have bought some washi tapes that I like and some metallic gel pens, but everything else I already had (being a teacher I already have quite a lot of stationery…)
Looking forward to other posts in this series!

    1. That’s fantastic to hear, Christina! And I still change up how I do my bullet journal too and I’ve had it for over a year now – not that I consistently used it, but still. And I think that’s one of my favorite things about bullet journals: you can change and evolve it as you go!

I hope to have the next post up by the weekend all about setting our bullet journals up and where to start for those who may not be as familiar with the system yet! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Best of luck for your bullet journaling resolution, Swetlana, I can’t wait to read your next posts in this series ๐Ÿ™‚ I have never done this kind of journal, but seeing everyone doing it and having gorgeous spreads just makes me… dreamy, I will say it this way, hahaha ๐Ÿ™‚ Maybe I should try someday ๐Ÿ˜›

    1. Thank you, Marie! I really hope that writing this series and sharing my bullet journal with everyone will help me stay motivated to actually use it for more than just a few weeks at a time! xD

Oh do I ever understand that feeling you have whenever seeing spreads! People are so creative and talented! And you should totally try it – you don’t have to go all out! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. I wanted to start bullet journaling a couple years ago but if the pages aren’t perfect, it would really irritate me. It’s the same reason I don’t scrapbook or have an Instagram account. So i decided it’s probably not for me… it’s a shame though because people’s designs are so lovely ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Hahahaha, I was the same way, to be honest! I am 100% certain that I did not need to get a bigger pack of Stabilo fine liners to get started but they looked pretty? So, of course I had to get them. xD And let’s not even talk about washi tape. I have waay too much of it. But I got most of it at Action so it didn’t cost me that much money.

  5. Good luck for your bullet journaling! I myself cannot make these kind of stuffs – my biggest problem with journaling in general is how I’d eventually stop doing the thing entirely and get tired of them ๐Ÿ™‚ But I am trying a smaller version of bullet journaling with a tiny notebook, but only focusing on scheduling my posts on this blog!

    1. Oh, believe me. I’ve stopped using my bullet journal multiple times since I started it too! But that’s the great thing about a bullet journal: you can just pick it back up whenever you feel like it and you don’t have to feel bad about having ‘wasted’ any pages or having blank pages, etc as YOU decide what you do with it.

I need to get organized about blog posts again.. I’ve been doing it all pretty much the day off and that’s not going to work for too long, I would assume. xD

  6. YASSSSS Iโ€™M SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS SERIES YOUโ€™RE DOING. As youโ€™ve seen, I also started bullet journaling and I love it so much???? I canโ€™t stop watching all the bullet journal related videos on YouTube and getting inspired (but also wasting my time and getting jealous because theyโ€™re all so PRETTYYY). And youโ€™re right, you honestly donโ€™t even need that many supplies and I had a lot of stuff at home already! Iโ€™ve been meaning to practice my handlettering/calligraphy and the bullet journal is the perfect way to do that! I also like how I feel a lot more organised since I stared my journal, but that might be an illusion, Iโ€™m not sure yet XD

Good luck with your bullet journaling journey, Iโ€™m excited to see more!
