As a person who currently has too many unread books on her shelf, I was trying to find a fun way to make myself at least start reading some of those books. Often enough, I’ll find that just getting started on something will be what gets me to finish it too (my dishes could tell you all kinds of stories).
So, what is a reader supposed to do to kick themselves into reading mode? Easy! Pick up any given number of books off your shelves and read the first chapter in each of them. Once you’ve read them all, you get to decide which books you want to actually continue reading because they grabbed your attention right away.
And no one says that you can’t read the other books at a later date – that’s absolutely something you could and should do!
When I was starting about how I could make this little challenge more interactive, I figured I’d give the people following me on Twitter the option to vote for the book they thought I should read. After the voting period was over, I would pick the top 3 voted for books for this challenge.
Books Up For Voting
I’ve mentioned before how I want to read Red Rising, so I figured I would include it in my line up. And of course I still haven’t read The Book Thief so that went on the list too – I mean, I got about halfway through at some point, it’s time I start and finish it! And Will Grayson, Will Grayson which is relatively new to my unread books but I figured I’ll add it too. Up next we also have:
At this point, I can’t even tell you guys how long The Girl At Midnight has been on my shelves. I feel like I got it not too long after its release and now the entire trilogy is finished. I also put two Sarah Dessen books up and Out Of The Easy which keeps grabbing my attention but then I pick up something else instead.
What You Guys Chose
Now, after everyone on Twitter had placed their votes, I was left with these three books having the most votes
The Book Thief got the most votes and I have to say, I expected it would. Actually, I figured all three of these books would be the top 3 and I’m super excited that they ended up winning!
What Happens Next?
Now that I have the three books you guys thought I should give a try, I’ll read about 30-ish pages of each of them and then decide which one I want to actually read in its entirety. I’ll be updating you guys on either Twitter or Instagram (or maybe both, I don’t know yet) so you guys should absolutely follow me over there!
I kind of want to build more of an interactive platform for myself and I figured this might be a good way to start – plus, who doesn’t love to talk about books on all the platforms, right???
Plus, I’ve been working really hard on keeping my Instagram a lot more active and it’s been so much fun, so you guys should follow me over there anyway. π I mean, look at what you’re missing out on
And just so you guys know, that’s pretty much what you can expect to see on my Instagram from now on: fun bookish aesthetics and book pictures featuring too long captions because would it even be my Instagram if it didn’t have long captions???
So yes, if you want to stay updated on how this challenge is going, please check out my Twitter and Instagram pages and follow me over there!
How about you guys? Have you done this challenge before and how did it work out for you? Or are you curious and want to do it yourself someday too?
Have you read any of the three books I will be giving a shot and what did you think of them? Do you agree with Twitter’s verdict of crowning The Book Thief the #1 book I should read? Let me know in the comments below! π
And make sure you use the links down below to follow me on my other social media channels so you don’t miss out on any of my updates as I do this challenge! π
Such a good idea. I really need to start chipping away at my bookshelf.

Thank you! I’m already thinking about doing the same to my German review copies because they’ve been sitting on my shelves for months now too and I really should get to them already. xD

This is such a fun challenge! I always struggle to pick what I want to read and often find myself stuck between 3 books or more! And then I end up picking something else entirely because I canβt decide XD I totally need to try reading the first chapter(s) of books and just continue reading what sounds best to me in that moment! So thanks for inspiring me hehe :β)
I canβt wait to see which book youβll pick! I kind of have a feeling that it wonβt be Will Grayson? Maybe? Idk I struggled to get into it when I read it and I donβt think the first chapters will be very convincing π

JACKIE! I missed seeing you around the blogosphere! <33
You should absolutely give it a try someday! I honestly hope that this will give me the motivation to MAYBE read all three of the books people voted for (can you IMAGINE, getting to cross of THREE books as unread from my shelves???) and maybe doing something similar with my German review copies that I've KIND OF lost a bit of interest in.
I feel like I'll either go with Red Rising or The Book Thief because I've owned both of them longer – but you never know!

This sounds really fun! I actually have trouble picking up my next read, especially if I’m in a weird mood like I am now. I didn’t enjoy Red Rising, but I love Will Grayson and The Book Thief, so I hope you’ll love them as much as I did!

I basically picked up Red Rising because I watched a ton of videos of Pierce Brown and he seemed like such a cool and down to earth guy and I wanted to know what he was like as an author! Plus, it seems like the fanbase for that series may not be HUGE but it’s dedicated and that’s making me curious too!
You should try reading various first chapters – maybe you’ll be able to find something that speaks to your current mood!

I did this tag once on my booktube channel and I thought it was a total blast! It really introduced me to books that I didn’t think I wanted to pick up as soon as possible, but after reading the first chapters I did! I tried out 5 books and actually have already read 3 of them which I feel like was a bit of a success! Lovely post! π

That sounds like a FANTASTIC experience and is actually what I hope will happen for me too!
Which books did you end up reading the first chapters of? And which ones did you end up reading completely?

Oh this is such a fun challenge π I only read Will Grayson from your list here, but I hope you’ll end up reading it entirely and will enjoy it! π

Thank you, Marie! π
I hope so too! Did you enjoy it when you read it? Jackie said the first few chapters might not be as convincing and I’m basically looking for any and all reasons why I should stick around after if it SEEMS like I might enjoy it! π

I really enjoyed it, yes, even if it took a little while to really kick off, it’s worth it π

I LOVE these try-a-chapter posts/videos, they have always sounded great to me π I would love to do something like that as well and I think I did do it once in the past with library books!
I loved The Book Thief, so I can definitely agree with the Twitter Poll! π I also loved the beginning and narration a lot π I’ve also loved Will Grayson, Will Grayson … but that has been 4(?) years ago so I don’t know what I would think now π Please do tell me what you think about Red Rising, I haven’t read it yet!

I might have an idea? What if we each gave the other say 3-5 books off their TBR shelves (physical or digital) and then we do this and talk about it in a blog post after? Maybe even ‘switch’ and you’d talk about experience on my blog and I’d do it on yours?
Ah, I’m so excited to hear that, Caro! The Book Thief seems to be SUCH A beloved book I really hope I end up liking it too! Will do! I am SO curious about Red Rising and really hope Pierce is as good an actor as he is a human being! π

Oh that’s a really great idea!! (I’m sorry I didn’t see this sooner) I would love to do something like that!! πππ
I definitely hope that you love it as well! Everyone has been screaming about Red Rising, so I truly hope that I will understand the hype once I read the book π
