2018 Reading Goals: Update #1

Good morning (I hope I’ll get this post done in time for it to still go up in the morning – I guess we’ll see!) you guys and happy Wednesday! I hope you’re having a nice day whatever you’re doing today and for all of my A Court Of Thorns And Roses lovers, I hope you survived A Court Of Frost And Starlight!

Me, I’m currently about 45% through the ebook so I don’t know exactly what the rest of the book has in store for me but I think I spoiled myself for what the spinoff trilogy might be about and I am freaking excited. I need the next book right now.

And allow me another quick tangent because I need a second to fangirl about a particular cover reveal we got just a few days ago before I actually jump into today’s post.

I think it’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Leigh Bardugo’s Six Of Crows duology and the world she created within her Grishaverse. Well, said world is going to get further explored in Leigh’s next book King Of Scars which is all about our young Mister Nikolai Lantsov.

And oh my god, I don’t think I am ready for this book??? I adore Nikolai. So much. BUT! We’re apparently also getting a second POV in King Of Scars that is one of the characters from Six Of Crows and I have a feeling that it’s gonna be NINA and if that is the case, I need the book right now. Someone, please invent time travel so I can jump ahead to the end of January 2019 and read this book, please and thank you.

170 words of rambling and I haven’t even shown you guys the cover yet. WOW. Okay, here it is:

king of scars

Isn’t it just oh so beautiful? I can’t wait to have it next to my collection of Leigh Bardugo books to stare at lovingly but also to reread a million times! What do you guys think about the cover and are you as excited about this book as I am? Let me know! 😉

And now, let’s return to what this post was actually supposed to be about, shall we?

I figured it would be a good idea to do multiple check-ins throughout 2018 to see how I was doing with my reading goals because this way I can step up my game if I need to (which, spoiler: I do) and hopefully accomplished the goals I set for myself.

Goal #1: Read 50 Books

Unbenannt

I feel like this is a goal I will be able to complete early in the year, especially since I’m already more than halfway there and according to Goodreads, I’m 11 books ahead of schedule! But not only that, I’m also currently reading three books that I’m at least a third of the way through – plus, with ACOFAS I will be finishing it either tonight or tomorrow.

But yeah, this is 100% something I will be able to accomplish and hopefully read a lot more than 50 books this year. I might even be a bit competitive with my 2017 result of reading 63 books and aim for at least 65 if not more books. And don’t get me wrong, please. I am not forcing myself to read a lot or to read quickly. Not at all! I’ve just been picking up really good books and flying through them (just take a look at my April reading month) which is why I’m so far ahead in my reading challenge.

Goal #2: Read 15 Contemporaries

fav contemporary books.png

As of writing this post, I have read a total of 10 contemporary novels and if anyone would have told me I would be a third of the way through my goal by April, I don’t know if I would’ve believed them. But, I keep picking up so many good contemporaries that I’m even actively requesting contemporary ARCs. I know. Who have I even become? And just in case you need some suggestions on what to read, any of the six pictured above are all fantastic and books I would highly recommend!

Goal #3: Read 10 Sci-Fi Novels

fave sci-fi.png

I’m currently exactly halfway through my goal, so that’s good seeing how we’re not even halfway through 2018 but I’m also kind of struggling to pick up sci-fi novels because they aren’t what I usually gravitate towards. I’m much more likely to pick up a fantasy or contemporary novel before I even reach for sci-fi. Guess I’ll have to make sure that I continue to pick up this genre more often so I don’t fall behind on this goal.

Goal #4: 25 Unread Books Off My Shelves

This is a goal that I changed when I set up my tracker for it in my bullet journal. Originally, I wanted to get down to 10 unread books on my shelves but then I realized that I get books quite often and it would be difficult to track this goal as the year went on, so I set a number of books I want to read off my shelves. And, I haven’t been doing very well on this goal, not going to lie. I’ve only read 4 books off my shelves so far so this is a major fail so far. I’ve just been reading so many eARCs or listen to a ton of audiobooks that I don’t feel the need to reach for physical unread books.

Goal #5: Read 15 2018 Releases

fave 2018 releases.png

Another goal that didn’t exist like this originally and I don’t even know I set this as a goal for myself when I know that I tend to read a ton of new releases anyway, but yeah. I want to read at least 15 2018 releases this year and I’m currently at 8/15 so that’s pretty good! I also decided to count the Shadowhunter Chronicles novellas as one 2018 release rather than each one individually. I mean, I do want this goal to last me a bit longer. xD

Goal #6: Read 7 Debut Novels

I’m currently at 4 out of 7 even though I’m having some trouble remembering what the fourth book is right now. *facepalms self* But since I’m already more than halfway through this goal I would say I’m doing a good job and should have no trouble whatsoever to finish it by the end of 2018! YAY!

Goal #7: Throne Of Glass Reread & Catch Up

Oh, I am miserably failing this goal so far, but Sandra and I just made plans the other day to reread the series together in time for Kingdom Of Ash so I should be able to complete this goal by the end of the year which is awesome! We also just made some reading plans in general which I’m super excited about because I’ve really enjoyed reading books together – either as a buddy read or like we did with Ace Of Shades as a traveling book!

Goal #8: 2018 Series TBR

Look, a goal I am doing okay on again! As I talked about in this post, I currently have five series on my TBR that I would like to get to in 2018 and I’ve made some progress on it and read at least the first book in 3 of the five series I talked about, so go me:

  • Ace Of Shades
  • Nevernight Book 1 / 2 (currently about 40% through book 1!)
  • Wayfarers Book 1 / 2
  • Red Rising Book 1 / 2 / 3 / 4
  • Monsters Of Verity Book 1 / 2

I obviously still want to get to the rest of the books and as I mention in my little list, I’m already reading Nevernight and as I announced in this post, I’ll be reading the first thirty-ish pages of Red Rising as part of a little challenge – probably for the month of May!

Goal #9: Read ARCs A Month In Advance

Um… Yeah, that is not happening whatsoever and I should really work on that because it stresses me out when I know I should have read and reviewed a book because the release is coming up but I haven’t started reading it yet. In fact, that’s what’s happening right now with The Smoke Thieves… I just need someone to kick me in the butt and give me that last bit of motivation that I need. So, I should probably make this more of a priority for the rest of 2018, right? Wish me luck, please!

lets chat 1

Okay, phew! That was a much longer post than I anticipated it being and I think my fingers are about to fall off, so let’s wrap this up, shall we?

What I want to know is how are you guys doing with your reading goals for 2018? Are you happy with where you’re at or do you need to check back and see how you’re doing? Let me know because I’m super curious and please tell me at least some of you guys need to step up their game with some of your goals? I can’t be the only one who is failing at some of them, right?

  1. KING OF SCARS! KING OF SCARS! KING OF SCARS!!! Umm… yeah, I’m super excited for it okay?! And OH MY GOODNESS THE COVER IS SO GORGEOUS AND I AM SO IN LOVE!!!!!!!!!

Hahaha, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way… This post made me really curious to go back and look at my goals for the year… I honestly don’t remember most of them, so I’m probably failing at the majority… I am however six books ahead of schedule on my reading challenge, so that’s nice.

  2. You’ve done well with your goals! I’m failing miserably with my ToG reread too – and I haven’t even read the 5th and 6th books 😦 I will probably begin my reread in sometime June.. And hopefully read all the books before the last one releases!

    1. I’m all caught up, except for Tower Of Dawn which had the misfortune of being released with SO MANY other fantastic books that I really wanted to read. But I’m hoping my buddy read is going to motivate me to start reading and to continue on reading! I’m also totally up for chatting about any reading progress you’ve made once you start reading! 😀

  3. It’s so cool to see how you’re doing with your goals.I sort of just want to ignore the fact that I even made goals and never think about them again. Goals who? What goals??
Good luck with your reading, you seem to be going pretty strong so far! Just for fun, I checked off your goals with what I’ve read this year and you’re definitely doing better at your goals than I am haha!

    1. Hahahaha, I probably would’ve ignored them all too until the end of the year, but since I update that particular spread in my journal quite frequently, I’m reminded of them quite often. xD

Oh no, but there’s still a lot of time to work towards those goals! It’s only the beginning of May afterall! 🙂

  4. Oh you’re doing so great with your goals so far, yay! I feel like you’ll rock your Goodreads challenge this year, you are so, SO far ahead already haha.
I’m also really thrilled you’re doing great with the contemporary reads, there are so many amazing contemporaries being released lately… well, if you need any recommendations, I’m still here 😉

  5. It seems like your goals are going well at the moment, you’re well ahead on your Goodreads Reading Challenge which is great. I’m a little behind at the moment but I should be caught up before too long, and oh I hope you love the rest of A Court of Frost and Starlight, I finished it earlier today and loved it, but now I need more from Feyre and Rhys and all the characters from that world. 🙂
I am so excited for King of Scars, it’s going to be amazing and yes I hope we see Nina in this book as well. She’s the one character from Six of Crows whose story I feel is left unfinished.
Great post, and good luck with the rest of your goals for this year. 😀 ❤

    1. OH DID I LOVE THE REST OF A COURT OF FROST AND STARLIGHT. I was kind of hoping we would end up following exactly that character in the spinoff series so I was SUPER stoked when I read that teaser at the end!

Shouldn’t we be getting news this weekend? I seem to remember Leigh said something about Yallwest and news so I’ll now be impatiently waiting for that reveal.

      Thank you, Beth! ❤

  6. The King of Scars cover is STUNNING but … *whispers* I still haven’t read Six of Crows. I adored Shadow and Bone … but then I stopped reading the Trilogy because someone said they hated the second book, so now I’m nervous 😮

Looks like you’re doing well with a lot of your goals! I began tracking my physical TBR on Goodreads and oh dear, I think I need a Unread Books Off My Shelves too 😅 Reading Arcs a month in advance … also is not working for me xD

Good luck with your goals, you can do it *cheers you on*! I think I’m going to do a Reading Goals check-in in June 🙂

    1. CARO I AM SO DISAPPOINTED RIGHT NOW. I think Sandra and I are doing a reread of the entire Grishaverse sometime this year as a buddy read, so maybe that’s a way for you to get the motivation to finish reading the books?

Hahaha, the only way I track my physical TBR is in my journal for some reason which is good because that means my Goodreads TBR isn’t TOO big. xD

Thank you! And good luck to you too! I can’t wait to see how you’re doing with your goals! 😀

      1. I KNOW I KNOW. That would be amazing!!! ♥ I definitely need that push to motivate me to finish the Grisha Trilogy and finally read Six of Crows … I mean I have all the books so I would love to join you!

I track everything on Goodreads, but now that I have a bullet journal too (yay!) I’m working on tracking my physical TBR there too 🙂
