The ‘NOPE’ Book Tag

Good evening and happy Wednesday, you guys! I hope you have had a nice day so far and are ready to hear some NOPE opinion from me in this tag! I was originally going to actually do another post today but I kept pushing it off and off (the number of books to talk about appeared to be quite daunting) and while procrastinating on YouTube last night I came across this tag and loved the idea of doing it on the blog too – especially since I was thinking of answers as I was watching the video! That is always a good sign in my book!

As this tag asks about some book endings and plot twists, I feel like it is a good idea to put a spoiler warning for this post. At no point do I mention any actual names or what the plot twists would be – I just say that there is something there. Which might be too much of a spoiler for you guys so please keep that in mind. Also, whenever I mention a specific book for this tag, I feature the cover right underneath the question so you guys can skip past if you want to avoid any possible spoilers!

But now, let us get into this tag already!

NOPE! Ending: a book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage or simply because the ending was crappy.

lord of shadows

This is an easy one and a book that is probably going to get a few repeat mentions here but please bear with me! We all know how much I love the Shadowhunters book, right? And anyone who has read Lord Of Shadows probably knows why the book is making its first appearance here. That ending is brutal, okay. You think you’re in the clear. You’re already pretty emotional because the end of Lord Of Shadows is, basically, punch after punch to any fan out there. And you think the worst is over and done with. But oh, sweet child, are you wrong. Because those last few pages (or is it even the last one?) they are out to get you. Trust me. I’m still not okay and it’s been over a year.

And for a bit of an older release: A Gathering Of Shadows! Let’s just say that I was really fucking happy that the final book in the trilogy was out already and I didn’t have to wait a year to know what happens next. Victoria played her readers dirty with that one!

NOPE! Protagonist: a main character you dislike and drives you crazy.

Hmmmm…. honestly, I don’t think there is anyone I can think of right now? I’m sure I’ve read annoying AF main protagonists but they seem to all be hiding in the darkest corner of my mind right now to make sure they won’t be named… thanks for that, guys!

NOPE! Pairing: a “ship” you don’t support.

a court of thorns and roses

I’m usually pretty on board with ships and stuff and the only one I can think of is Tamlin and Feyre. That one gets a big fat NOPE from me on so, so many levels. My rage is coming through so let’s move on.

NOPE! Plot twist: a twist you didn’t see coming and didn’t like.

the cruel prince

Ooooh! This is one that had me go NOPE for the best reason and it’s related to The Cruel Prince. There are some scenes in there that are so good?! I can’t wait for The Wicked King – it is bound to be filled with so much more stuff that is bound to be so, so interesting.

NOPE! Genre: a genre you will never read.

I feel like romance isn’t something I will be reaching for in the foreseeable future? I’ve read some romance novels before (of the paranormal kind, which I did really enjoy) but I’m just really loving my fantasy and contemporary novels at the moment!

NOPE! Book format: book formatting you hate and avoid buying until it comes out in a different edition.

E-books! It just takes me so much longer to actually read them which tends to really annoy me. I don’t know what it is about physical books that makes me read them faster (usually) compared to e-books. Which might also explain why I have such a hard time with certain eARCs at times.

NOPE! Trope: a trope that makes you go NOPE.

Love triangles and instalove. There is exactly one love triangle out there that I adore to pieces and that’s Will/Tessa/Jem from The Infernal Devices. That is a triangle I will defend for the rest of my life. It is written so freaking well to the point that you can’t really pick someone you’d want Tessa to end up with. Sure, I have a favorite when it comes to Will or Jem as characters (it’s Jem, by the way) on their own but as a triangle? All of the relationships are so good (including and especially the friendship between Will and Jem, I feel like this triangle wouldn’t be as awesome if it weren’t for their friendship) and well developed and you just want to root for all three of them to just be fucking happy.

NOPE! Recommendation: a book recommendation that is constantly pushed at you, that you simply refuse to read.

HARRY POTTER LATEST BOOK COVERS

Harry Potter? I don’t think there is anything out there right now that I would say immediately NOPE to. And to be fair, I only read the first book in the series but it wasn’t able to really suck me in so I don’t really have an interest in continuing on. It is a seven book series after all and that takes quite the commitment.

NOPE! Cliche: a cliche or writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes.

‘She/He let out the breath she/he didn’t realize they were holding.’ – I cannot see this sentence anymore. I am sick and tired of it. But also, it never even stood out to me as something that happens a lot in YA until someone said it and I haven’t been able to unsee it ever since. Thanks for that, stranger on the internet.

NOPE! Love interest: the love interest that’s not worthy of being one.

a court of thorns and roses

LMAO again: Tamlin. He’s a dick. I don’t care for him in the tiniest bit. Especially after everything he put Feyre through. And then that scene in A Court Of Wings And Ruin just sealed his asshole status for me. He can fuck off for all I care.

NOPE! Book: a book that shouldn’t have existed.

I don’t know if there’s really something I would say shouldn’t exist? I’m sure there are people who would want to read a book I think isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on so… but maybe the Fifty Shades books? Or those books by Anna Todd that are basically One Direction fiction published with different names for the characters?

divider (1)

NOPE! Villain: a villain you would hate to cross.

throne of glass

There have to be quite a few that I’ve read about but the only one I can think of right now is the king from Throne Of Glass? We’re introduced to someone else later on in the series that I think was pretty horrible too and appears to be even worse in the little sneak peek we’ve gotten of Kingdom Of Ash but I haven’t gotten to that point in my reread yet to properly compare, so we’re going with the king. He’s an asshole.

NOPE! Death: a character death that still haunts you.

lord of shadows

See, I told you Lord Of Shadows would make another appearance and we’ve officially gotten to that point! We won’t mention names or anything as to not spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read the book yet just know that I have been hurting for months and apparently I will be hurting for a while longer because we got a sneak peek for Queen Of Air And Darkness that was painful to read. PAINFUL.

NOPE! Author: an author you had a bad experience reading for and have decided to quit.

Um, I don’t really have an answer for this but Lia has a shelf on Goodreads with authors who have done some fucked up things in the past that I am avoiding because I don’t want to support them anymore. And yes, I am well aware of the bullshit Cassandra Clare pulls and I feel like the biggest hypocrite for still buying and supporting her books. I’m just too invested at this point.

Grab Your Coffee And Let's Talk!

Now that we have covered my answers for this tag – I want to hear from you guys! Take up to five of the prompts above and share your answers. Please keep in mind that we do not spoil books for other people on here.

By the way, do you guys enjoy when bloggers do tags on their blogs regularly? I often find myself trying to decide if I should do them more often or keep them to every couple of weeks or months because I don’t want you guys to get bored reading my blog. Please let me know how you think!

I also want to tag some people but I’m not actually on my laptop right now, so I’ll add that in here later tonight once I’m home again! But of course if you want to do more than just a few of these prompts, feel tagged! And if you want to share a pingback so I can read your post – I’d love to do that too! 🙂

  1. Great answers for this tag Swetlana (though I did have to skip past the questions where you featured The Dark Artifices because I haven’t read that series yet) and I agree with so many of your answers too. I’m really not a fan of Tamlin and Feyre, I didn’t realise how horrible their relationship was until Rhys came on the scene though, and when it comes to love triangles the only one I don’t hate is the one in The Infernal Devices trilogy. I think because Will and Jem loved each other as much as they each loved Tessa it was better developed you know? 🙂
Great post, and again great answers! 🙂 ❤️

  2. I always love it when I read answers for this tag, it’s just obvious that the writer had so much fun making it 😀 I think we can universally agree that TID has THE BEST love triangle ever written ❤ I really need to start reading TDA though, I have the first book I just need to pick it up! 😅

  3. I always love this tag 🙂 I love your answers, especially with HP. I read the first three when they first came out when I was young and while I love the films, I had other books growing up that mean more to me and I’m just not motivated to finish the series off right now.

  4. Lovely answers for this tag! ❤ I find it so strange that you read faster with a physical copy of a book, strangely it works the other way around for me, I am way quicker at reading an e-book than I am for a physical copy, somehow? I do love both formats though haha 🙂 And yes for that sentence about the breath she/he/they were holding. I did not notice or pay much attention to that sentence until someone pointed it out online and now… well, I can't unsee it hahaha.

  5. Okay, the death in Lord of Shadows haunts me to this day. It destroyed me. Will/Tessa/Jem are my favorite fictional characters in the world and I’ll love them forever ❤ and if I’m completely honest, I never ever liked Tamlin. I had zero interest in the guy from the very beginning. Love that tag btw!

  6. Oh I loved reading all your opinions on this Tag 💕

I definitely agree on the infernal devices, it has honestly the best love triangle out there! I usually hate the trope but here it was SO well done 😍

I‘m also interested to see where Throne of Glass is headed, this is going to be a wild ride for sure 😱

  7. I love reading tags so I would love to do some! I guess one nope author for me is Renee Ahdieh because I just did not like her last book and I don’t see me picking it up. I don’t know about the Cassandra Clare drama but I do like her books! I still gotta get to Clockwork Princess though.

  8. A couple of years late, but….

I like it when bloggers do a tag or two a month. As long as they are not all YA ones. A good tag post tells a lot about the blogger and if they’ve been posting for a while, gives me a chance to see some older books/reviews of theirs that I hadn’t since following them.
