Review: The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

Hello and happy Wednesday, you guys! I hope you’ve had a good week so far (for my fellow King Of Scars reading people – how is it going so far? Are you guys alright??? Obviously, please, no god damn spoilers.) – I hope my week has been going well.

I’m writing up this review on Monday to post on Wednesday (and! in a surprising turn of events, there’s a post already scheduled for Friday too!) and I’m hoping I’ll be deep into King Of Scars by the time this post goes up – but who knows. I haven’t even heard ANYTHING about when my copy gets shipped, so there’s that. *cries*

BUT. That’s not even what we’re here to discuss today!

I recently finished Roshani Chokshi’s The Gilded Wolves and while I planned on including it in a Recently Read post down the line, I actually ended up with too many words for just this book so I figured I might as well give it a proper spotlight in a review as I loved it and want you guys to read it too!

And now, before this introduction gets any longer, let’s just hop into this review, shall we? Enjoy! 🙂

I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve basically not been able to escape the hype for The Gilded Wolves.

This book slowly gained traffic with book people and before I knew what happened, pretty much everyone was raving about this book. And if there’s one thing you should know about me it’s that I tend to get quite curious about really hyped books – especially when they aren’t being thrown at me via sponsored content.

One day, I was checking Scribd for an audiobook to listen to and stumbled upon this shortly after the release. Obviously, I had to download it and give it a listen. How could I not? And man, am I glad that I trusted the hype with this one.

When you read the description of this book on Goodreads you might be reminded of Six Of Crows a little bit (the heist element and a group of misfits working together) and I’m not gonna lie, that might’ve given me a slight nudge too (we know I adore the SOC duology).

Like SOC, The Gilded Wolves features an amazingly diverse cast (check here for a list – the list doesn’t include the fact that Hypnos is of Haitian descent, which is a fact that wasn’t included in ARCs from what we’ve seen) that’ll wrap you around their fingers rather quickly. And also like SOC, TGW features a ship that’ll rip you apart with their tension and their pre-book history. Honestly.

There’s this one scene that involves a dance and this was both me and a character involved while reading it:

The tension is so freaking good. AND. It’s only going to get better with book two, trust me. The final scene between these characters – you can cut the tension with a god damn knife. And yes, I keep using the word tension here. But that’s what it is? And it’s the best kind too.

We all have certain things that we are trash for with our ships right? And with what’s been set up for book two and this ship? I’ll be on ‘Delena in the Denver episode’ levels of excited once I get to read that book and all of those scenes.

BUT! These two aren’t the only ship tugging at your heartstrings. Oh, no! Hypnos is out here flustering Enrique and flirting with Zofia and you’re just along for the ride. I can’t wait to see where Roshani takes this particular dynamic – if it’s going places.

Hypnos might also very quickly become one of you guys’ favorite characters. I sure love him already and I can’t wait to learn even more about him and see how he deals with everything that’s been set up. It’s going to be so interesting, that’s for sure! He’s quite dramatic, funny and just wants some friends.

And speaking of friends, that’s something The Gilded Wolves does really well too: the relationships between all of the characters. Like, yeah they’re all friends as a group but these people also have individual relationships with each other and care so, so deeply about each other – they’ll even feed your pet spider.

I really don’t know what else I need to tell you guys because it would probably go into spoiler territory and that’s about the last thing I’d want to do. I want you guys to read and experience this book yourselves. Which obviously means that I’d recommend it to you guys too. Highly, actually!

The Gilded Wolves was actually my introduction to Roshani Chokshi and her writing and now I’m quite curious about her previous Young Adult novels!

I had them on my TBR at some point (if I remember correctly) but I took them off again because I didn’t know when I’d actually get to them but after reading this book? It might actually be sooner than I would’ve thought!

The Gilded Wolves is actually already out so you guys can get your hands on it immediately – just visit your bookstore/library of choice!
