Morning you guys! How are you all doing today? How has your weekend been? Did you guys have a fun time? Did you do any reading? Please say you did, I feel like I need all the motivation I can get at the moment. Netflix has been stealing all my time (but I am almost all caught up with the Marvel shows I want to watch!) and I feel like I can’t get away from it long enough to actually start reading a book. #oops. But! I did listen to another chapter of Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy today, which is awesome!
And speaking of audiobooks, they’ll actually be part of one of my bookish confessions I want to talk to you guys about! We all love reading about people’s various confessions and I figured talking about some bookish ones would be the perfect start into the new week, so let’s get started before I continue to ramble.
I Dog-Ear My Pages
Horrible, I know. But I’ve been doing that for so many years now and even though I try my best to avoid it whenever possible, sometimes that’s the only way to mark a page or scene. And honestly, I don’t mind. I don’t need the pages of my books to be in perfect condition.
I Write In My Books
This probably isn’t a surprise to some of you guys, if you’ve been reading my blog for a couple of months now as I did an entire post all about writing into your books! I am a huge fan of this – even if it took me a little to actually get used to doing it and not feeling a tiny bit of guilt over it. Nowadays, the books that show clear signs of having been read are my absolute favorites.
I Crack My Spines
Not on purpose – usually, but it does happen more often than not. Especially since I usually buy paperbacks and I find it’s much more difficult to keep those spines 100% intact! But again, it’s a sign of a well-read and loved book, so I’m game!
I Have Food Stains In Some Of My Books
Yep. This has happened before. Mostly before I grew so attached to my phone and I used it as entertainment when I was eating by myself. I also have to say, I no longer read while I’m eating. I can’t be trusted with food near books. Especially anything that includes a red sauce. I can’t even be trusted with that around myself… my white tank tops always end up with tiny red splatters of soup or sauce.
I Will Buy A Book Because Of The Cover
Yep, I am 100% that person. And I don’t mind? I mean, what am I supposed to do when books have absolutely stunning covers??? I am weak, okay? I love looking at beautiful things. Actually, I will wait a couple of weeks longer just so I can buy a different edition of the book. This just happened with Daughter Of The Burning City by Amanda Foody. I waited for the UK paperback release because I prefer that cover.
There Are Books On My Digital TBR I’m Not Sure I’ll Ever Read
We all have TBRs that are just ridiculously long and we might have trouble finishing them unless we ignore any and all other responsibilities to read for the rest of our lives. The thing with my digital TBR is that some of the books have been on there for so many years now that I am 95% sure I’ll never actually read them. Especially considering that I continue to add more books to it. It’s a vicious cycle, guys.
I Often Fall For The Hype
Let’s just make sure we don’t include books by authors I know I love in this list – this is about books that aren’t by people I know I will want to read as soon as possible. This is about all those books that everyone and their grandma seems to be talking about and loving and that I absolutely have to check out too because obviously, I want to know what everyone (and their grandma) is talking about!
I’m Already Thinking About Which Book To Buy Next – Despite The Many Unread Books On My Shelves
I feel like ever since I started blogging, this has definitely gotten to be more of a problem. I want all the new releases on my shelves – by yesterday. And that’s just not realistic. I mean, I should 100% read all those unread books first and then think about getting more books. But it’s new books. And I love the smell of new books. I can’t help it.
I Will Push Back Reading A Book Because I’m Worried I Won’t Enjoy It
This is honestly the worst thing for me. I will have looked forward to a book for weeks or even months and then once I hold it in my hands? Yeah, no. Let’s just stare at it for a couple more days (or weeks) and then we can read it. Maybe. We’ll read it maybe. Because what if it’s not as great as everyone says??? What am I supposed to do then, huh???
I Prefer Reading Physical Books Over EBooks But Love Audiobooks
How does this even work? I have absolutely no problem listening to an audiobook, but when it comes to reading an ebook I’m over here like ‘I would rather be reading a physical book!’. Audiobooks aren’t physical copies of a book either. But I don’t mind those. I have actually started to really love them this year!
I Used To Never DNF A Book
Up until very recently, I would never DNF a book. I would always make myself read a book front to back. Even if I didn’t enjoy it as much as I would have liked. I had to finish reading the book. I’m so glad I decided to change that because I would honestly much rather be reading books I love!
I Won’t Read A Book For Weeks At A Time And Sometimes Feel Guilty About It
This one is probably something I have to constantly tell myself not to worry about. I don’t have to be reading a book every other day. I can take a break from reading for weeks and do something else instead and it doesn’t change my love for reading. Marie actually recently shared a very fantastic post all about reading and how she’s been feeling about it lately – which summed up my feelings really well. You should check it out!
How about you guys? Do you enjoy reading about someone else’s confessions – blogging, bookish or otherwise? What are your favorite confession type of posts to read?
What are some of your bookish confessions? Do you prefer physical books? Do you frown upon people who write/highlight in their books? Share some with all of us in the comments below!
Wow, dog-earing, food stains, writing in your books?! Well…you can say that your books are really living, with so many traces of you everywhere 😛 I don’t do any of these things , but totally respect people that do, obviously, to each their own 🙂 I often fall for the hype as well – sometimes, I just can’t help it, I have to know what everyone is talking about and WHY they’re talking about it so much. I want to figure it out for myself if it’s that good, if it’s THAT worth all of the hype. I’m just too curious overall, ahah.
Thank you so, so much for sharing my post, I’m so happy you related to it so much ❤
I loved reading these confessions 🙂

I finished one of Adam Silvera’s books last night because I finally wanted to know what the hype was all about it… and I didn’t get it. But at least I now know what his books are like! Though, I’m sure I’ll read his other books too, because I did really enjoy the writing.

Ohh, which book did you read? 😀 I understand – sometimes it’s so frustrating, when you hear SO much about a book and, when you finally read it, well…it’s just not as great as you thought it’d be.

I read They Both Die At The End! And while I really liked it and got SO stressed for the last 20% of the book or so, I didn’t tear up once or shed a single tear.

Oh, wow – it hadn’t quite the emotional impact you expected, then, I guess, ahah

Ooh, yes, I crack spines as well! Sometimes, I can’t avoid it! My Harry Potter and Percy Jackson books have cracked spines and are so old and tattered, but I love them like that! ❤️ I fall for the hype as well, and sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t! 🙈 I also put off books and feel guilty about it, mainly because I leave books in the middle of it, and then feel like I’m never going to return to them! The stress! 😅

I usually can’t do that – I either have to finish it or DNF it. But I’ve been in the middle of Down Among The Sticks And Bones for weeks now and just today made some progress again. I don’t know who I have become. xD

I agree with so many of these! I also dog ear my books and write in them! This was a great post 🙂

So glad to read about people who also dog-ear their books and write in them!
Thank you, Jessica! I’m happy to hear you enjoyed it! 🙂

I always fall for the hype as well! Sometimes it ends up really well but sometimes…not so much. My bookish confession is that I actually prefer e-books to physical books. It’s a really unpopular opinion but it just makes it so much easier for me to travel with a variety of books. I’m not good at making decisions so having to choose a few books to take with me if I’m going somewhere is torture 😂 .

Oh yeah, that is definitely quite the unpopular opinion! BUT makes 100% sense! I don’t even want to think about having to carry multiple physical copies of books! Books are HEAVY. That’s why I love audiobooks though. I have a couple on there that I haven’t listened to yet but also ones I have listened to already but LOVED so much that I wouldn’t mind re-listening to them!

exactly! I travel quite a lot so it’s just way more practical for me! I wish I could use audiobooks. I just can’t seem to get along with them 😔

I also dogear my books, and I would say at least three quarters of my owned books have food or beverage stains in them. And feeling guilty about not reading is such a problem for me!

Phew, I’m so glad that other people have food stains in their books too! I was feeling just the tiniest bit guilty about that one!

I do most of these too! Especially the writing on books! Haha. A lot of people would probably scold me for doing so but its fun to read back on your notes when you reread it. 😀

That is honestly the most fun thing to do! Like, I enjoyed having tabs in my books from a previous reading, but actually knowing what I was thinking is even more fun!

Guilty My Lord! Ha ha, yes I’m guilty of quite a few of these too: dog eared page corners, cracking spines, although when I read Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen recently, I was reading by only opening the book a fraction, just to preserve the lovely cover, I wasn’t aware of doing this until about half way through, it was as if I was sneaking into the magical world.
The only time I’ve written in a book was when I found one so full of typos that I needed advice about them before I tried to review it.
Loved the post.

Oh boy! A book full of typos? How did that even get printed???
I have to admit, I don’t think I’ve ever tried to be really careful with my paperbacks to make sure I don’t break the spine – not even by accident. But that is a fantastic way of thinking about it!

Sadly some of the smaller presses, like vanity presses, will accept a writer’s money and have very low standards of acceptance. Some, not all, self published books are also in need of serious editing/ proofreading. I work with a lot of indie and self published authors so probably see a higher percentage of this type of book.

RELATABLE, GIRL.
Honestly, I relate to SO MANY OF THESE it’s insane. Except I don’t dog ear my pages anymore or crack the spine.
BUT SAMEEEEE WITH THE FOOD SPLATTERING THING. Dude I always manage to spill something on myself like every day??? HOW DO PEOPLE WEAR WHITE WHILE EATING SPAGHETTI.

I have no idea. And I totally do it too often as it is… My poor white tops. 😂😂
