My Goodreads TBR is something that has changed in size over and over again since I joined the website back in August of 2012.
When I first discovered the online book community and found my way to Goodreads I would add every book I heard about to my TBR. I must’ve had more than 300 books on there at some point and while I used to be okay with it at first it would soon start stressing me out. I knew I had to change things.
No Sequels
One of the very first things I did once I decided to clean out my digital TBR was to delete every sequel off my shelves.
I kept adding full series to my shelves which would add up quicker than you’d think (even though back in the early 2010s it felt like trilogies were ruling the market) and ultimately made no sense to me.
If I hadn’t read the first book yet, why would I need every other book in the series on there too? I didn’t even know if I would actually enjoy the series.
Doing this took a good 200 books off my shelves and was quite the relief in itself.
Up Coming Releases Shelf
This is a shelf I introduced to my fixed/permanent shelves on Goodreads sometime in 2017.
I knew I wanted to keep track of any upcoming releases I was excited about (in part because I used to do monthly releases posts too) without having them clutter up my TBR of books that are already released.
Now, I’ll keep a book on my ‘Not Released Yet’ shelf until their release and then move them to my TBR – if I’m still interested in them. Sometimes I find myself looking at the releases for a certain month and I no longer want to read some of the books so they’ll get removed from my shelves entirely.
Regular Clear Outs
Again, a more recent addition to my Goodreads habits but something that has helped me out a lot.
I used to barely ever look at my TBR unless I was looking for something to read (as one does) but because there were just so many books on there I’d quickly feel overwhelmed.
Now, I’ll go into my digital TBRs after a few weeks and see if I’m still interested in whatever’s on there at that point. Dong this has actually lead to my current number of 12 books too.
I just looked at what was still on my shelf and some of the books aren’t on my immediate TBR and I’d rather have a ton of room on that shelf to add stuff to rather than it overwhelming me.
Immediate TBR Only (Mostly)
This one is very, very recent (aka I decided on it while writing this post).
We’ve talked about me not doing TBRs, right? But I’ve recently heard about the Series Crackdown readathon happening soon and I thought ‘Hmm. Maybe you could mainly keep books you see yourself reading soon on your digital TBR.’.
This way, I’m keeping somewhat of a TBR that isn’t immediately visible to everyone else unless they go looking for it and I have an idea of what I want to read.
But would I even be myself if there weren’t certain limitations and exceptions to my own rules? xD
So yes, the majority of my digital TBR is immediate TBR only plus a couple of books I want to keep on there to remind myself to read them soon-ish. The same way that I talk about books on here to give myself that extra push.
That’s all the books currently on my Goodreads TBR – which might also give you an idea on what I’d read for the readathon if I end up participating. π
How about you guys? How do you organize your Goodreads TBRs and how often do you update/reorganize them? Do you keep separate shelves for upcoming releases or any other exclusive shelves to help you organize things? Let’s discuss in the comments down below! I can’t wait to hear from you. π
I love your organization! My Goodreads shelves are such a mess. At some point I just decided to embrace the chaos which probably wasn’t the best choice, if I’m being honest. I should sit down one day and just mass purge and organize. If you believe that I’ll actually do that I have a bridge to sell you. I bow to you, the one with the organized Goodreads shelves!

The key for me to keeping them organized was not to have too many shelves. xD I used to organize them even more but I quickly realized that it was too much work, so i just have shelves roughly for publication year, type of book, a yearly read shelf and then one for each month of the current year that has new releases on it. It’s still pretty manageable this way. π

I thought this was a really interesting post, Swetlana!! I also cut down my tbr one time but at a much larger degree?? I had a tbr of over 1,000 books and I was able to cut it down to around 300 books… I actually did the same as you! I culled all of my sequels and then I created a βkeeping-trackβ of shelf and also a βmaybeβ in case I wasnβt completely sure π

DAMN. How much time did it take you to cut down your TBR that much??? I also really like your system for still keeping track of sequels!

Wow organization goals!!! My TBR is a bit of a wreck. Haha! It used to be far worse, but Iβve been periodically cleaning it out. I too, donβt add any sequels to my tbr for series I havenβt started. My main tbr consists of around 250 books, but I keep my βimmediate tbrβ shelf to under 10 books at all times. Haha. β€οΈ

That’s a pretty big number but I love the idea of an immediate TBR! That usually seems much more doable than having a huge overall one.

Reading the title I gasped π±π Joking aside, I loved reading your post it was so interesting to read about how you organize your TBR!! π Mine is slightly bigger, but I also started taking off sequels, as I used to have an entire Series on my shelves and it was a lot ππ
Also pleeease join me in participating in the Series Crackdown πππ Iβm so excited for that Readathon!! I also vote that you read Renegades π Iβll likely be reading the sequel π±

I obviously failed in joining the readathon. I kind of feel off the reading daily thing a week ago and haven’t picked up a book since. xD I really need to get back to it though. There are too many books to be read and not enough time! I hope you have a fantastic time with the readathon though! π

Oh no π± But you can totally get back to it β€ Due to my internship I’m a bit slower with my reading, but gladly tomorrow is already Friday! πThanks π

This is really great! I do regular clean up, but it’s like once every three months or so. I don’t do sequels either, except the direct one, so I only add book two but not book 3 because I tend to forget their existence if I don’t add them to my tbr π Currently it’s sitting around 600 books, but it’s still better compared to 1200-ish books of last year! π Great post, Swetlana!

DAMN, that is a lot of books, Tasya! But whatever works for you is what works for you. π

I generally try hard not to add absolutely everything to my Goodreads tbr. I’m pretty self-controlled when it comes to what I add on there, but…and there is a but, I often still keep them on my radar anyway; meaning they end up being bought at some stage! (Head in hands with despair ) My issue is buying too many books I never get around to reading!

I’m so glad that I’m currently on a stricter budget for books so I’m not tempted to buy too many books which keeps my physical TBR to a doable number. But yeah, I’ve got so many books on my mental TBR at all times, plus with blogging it keeps growing quicker than I can ever read! xD

I admire you SO much π I don’t add series entirely to my TBR, but even without that, my TBR is pretty… well, it’s getting bigger and bigger every day. I really should do some spring cleaning, because I am certain that there are so many books I am no longer interested in!
I try to organize my goodreads shelves a little bit by release year, but other than that I… guess I am pretty lazy. I’m just glad that my actual TBR is not my goodreads TBR. My real, immediate TBR (the books I can read immediately that I bought / received / as e-books etc) is always, always kept under 10 books otherwise I freak out a little bit ππ
Fantastic post! π

For me, it’s actually the other way around. My physical TBR is actually bigger than my Goodreads one but that’s partly because I got quite a few books when I first started blogging and never got around to reading them, so they’re sitting on my shelves staring at me. xD But that’ll hopefully change this year!

It seems so strange to only have 12 books on your TBR list. I definitely admire you for sticking to keeping just your immediate TBR list on your GR shelf, I mean I have regular clear outs of my TBR list on Goodreads but I also have a terrible memory so if I don’t add everything I want to read (even books I know I won’t get around to until the end of the year, or later) I’ll forget about it.
I hope you enjoy all the books on your TBR list, I have The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo on my TBR list too, and hopefully I’ll be able to get around to it soon to. π
Great post, and happy reading. π β€

Yeah, whenever I see my own TBR I’m a bit like ‘HUH’ too but I’m hoping this will make reading an easier/stress free activity for the long run.

My Goodreads TBR only has 37 books on it. Not quite 12, but still pretty low. That also contains a mix of books I own, and anticipated releases. There are only one or two books that are on there that are out, but I don’t own. Whenever my TBR shelf is close to 50 I start getting super stressed. I really should do what you do and separate my owned books from pre-releases to keep my sanity.
The reason I keep upcoming releases on my TBR shelf is because I want to remember to pre-order them or to put them on hold from my library. There’s a lot of time that passes between the release of a books existence and the time before its available for purchase and I don’t want to forget it in that space.
Great post!

That’s why I keep them organized on monthly shelves for the current year! And whenever I have the budget to get a new book, I’ll check those shelves and preorder the ones I REALLY need/want to get to ASAP.
Thank you!

I tend to use my goodreads tbr as more of a loose guideline to what I maybe want to read, because otherwise I’ll forget about them all. I don’t actually feel the need to read every single one of them (or else it would majorly stress me out), I just add everything I vaguely want to read because my memory is horrible and it helps me keep track of what I might possibly want to read.
But also same, I only ever add one book at a time in a series, because I honestly have no idea whether or not I’ll want to continue with it.

That’s how I used to do it too, actually! Which is why I was fine with a bigger TBR for the longest time but it just started to be too much and needed to be changed up again. Who knows, maybe I’ll change it again in a couple of months!

I think I need to be on a stricter budget! Yeah being in the book community constantly alerts you to new amazing books, which means temptation is always there π!
